Sutton's is the best atmosphere for a UNC fan, bar none. Down home feeling, great service and friendly staff, traditional and yummy menu options. Beyond affordable! Feels like home and has a vintage flair. You can't get any more classic of a spot like this on Franklin Street.

I've been to Sutton's twice now and have really enjoyed both my experiences. Coming here feels like taking a step back in time - they have been open since 1923 and still have lots of old relics around that really add to the atmosphere (old cash register, old Coca Cola memoribilia, etc.).
The place is decorated wall-to-wall with pictures of UNC athletes, students, and families. Service is super friendly (they definitely bring that Southern charm!), but it can get busy, especially on weekends.
In terms of food, on my most recent visit I got the "Big Cheese" hot dog (topped with bacon, melted cheese, chili, and shredded cheese) and a side of potato munchers. The hot dog was messy but satisfying. The potato munchers were something unique that I had never tried - deep fried potato, cheddar cheese, and jalapeno (our waitress raved about them, and offered to bring me regular fries if I didn't like them). They were flavorful (not super spicy) and I devoured every last one. I couldn't help but sneak quite a few of my husband's crinkle cut fries as well, which were also on point.
Best of all, this place is priced to be affordable to students. The cool soda bottle selection and old fashioned candy on display in the front of the store further add to the unique vibe of Sutton's. This has become a favorite place of ours whenever we're in the Chapel Hill area. -

Came here on a Saturday morning after a night on the town. I was pleasantly surprised given what I had heard about the food.
SETTING: Walking in here is like taking a step back in time...the drug store is very old school, with pictures all hanging from the ceiling. The flat top grill is completely visible to everyone as well which gives it a diner vibe.
FOOD: The breakfast menu is tiny but it has most basics...I had eggs over easy, sausage, and pancakes. Kinda hard to mess up eggs, the sausage was good, but the pancakes were really good (but maybe that was because I never eat pancakes). It was all under $10 too which was a nice plus (the weekend in Chapel Hill was cheap in general compared to Boston which was nice).
One really nice thing we witnessed while eating...at the table next to us, we saw our waitress being given an envelope by a group of guys. Apparently, they are regulars and knew it was her birthday so they got her a card which I thought was the sweetest thing. Shows the community/family feel of this place. -

Six of us stopped at Sutton's today for lunch. We all had burgers which on their own would rate a 5*. Our sides of onion rings and French fries were good, but not worth a 5* rating. Neat place to have lunch. Service was very good.

Sutton's is an iconic spot on Franklin. It's your typical greasy spoon burger and sandwich joint. They have a really friendly staff and serve up some great burgers, dogs, and sandwiches. They have a hot dog deal on Tuesday I think that's a great deal for nearby students. It can get pretty packed during lunch, but they move the line quick.
